Basements are somehow always the most neglected area of our entire house. They take the shape of a dungeon-like room that often turns into our biggest nightmares, a dumping ground we all want to avoid.

However, a clean basement can offer great storage spaces that can be effectively used for many things like a home office, gyms, additional living space, or just an organized storage room where you keep seasonal possessions.

With spring upon us, you must be wondering how to step into your cleaning game. Don’t worry; this article will rescue you from the dreadful task and guide you to clean your basement efficiently.

Benefits of Basement Cleaning

Stacking boxes over boxes only builds up anxiety, and I know I am not the only one who feels this way. If you are one of those who have pushed the job of cleaning out for years, then you are not alone. We have all done it! But let this year define a new you. To help you out, we have put together a list of benefits of basement cleaning to make the first move.

Say Goodbye to Hoarding

A lot of things are cast aside and rediscovered through time as you begin to stir through the old boxes, possibly even aided by space organizers. But you know what, you could probably do without most of the items stored in your basement.

Pest Control and Prevention

Clutter invites critters and pests, which love to make their homes in hard to reach areas. It is likely for uninvited guests such as mice, spiders, and other bugs to start living in your basements over time. If you don’t declutter regularly, you may be inviting a host of critters to destroy your home and belongings.

Cleanouts Benefit Everyone

While you are at it, you’ll be surprised at what you’ve been hoarding for months or even years, just like I did. The amount of space they have been occupying will also make you realize that the space in your entire basement is being misused. You can think of accommodating important things for the rest of your family members, too. As the famous decluttering expert Marie Kondo said on fs.blog, “When you are choosing what to keep, ask your heart; when you are choosing where to store something, ask your house.”

Yearly

Here is a full-fledged plan to get you started on cleaning your basement. We have broken it down into three sections: Yearly, Monthly, and Weekly.

Cleaning should be done regularly over a year for maintenance. Some cleaning tasks are more time and labor-intensive, which is why I feel that these heavy-duty jobs can be attended to once a year. They include:

●      Replacing light bulbs.
●      Cleaning light shades.
●      Wall fixtures
●      Cleaning baseboards and doors.

Decluttering is crucial to maintenance. You have to gear up at least once every year to dig down all the storage items in your basement.

●      Take inventory for a thorough check. You should have a list of possessions you are storing in your basement.

●      Pare down the boxes that have been there but have no purpose. This is a good time to discard or donate items that are no longer useful to you or the family.

Monthly

Tidying up every month ensures that you are not treating your basement as a dungeon. Some of these monthly maintenance tasks include:

●      Clean sofa covers, if there are any.
●      Laundry load for cushion covers, sheets, curtains, or any other textiles
●      Clean windows and blinds
●     Floor cleaning (take special care of a concrete floor)
●     Dust walls and surfaces with a microfiber cloth

Weekly

Weekend duties should include a visit to your basement to spruce it up to make it look neat and clean. Some of the weekly maintenance tips include:

●     Clear out bins/trash cans
●     Discard items that are no longer important
●     Mop surfaces and floor

I highly recommend you have your cleaning supplies ready to clean your basement. You’ll need rubber gloves, access to warm water, microfiber cloths, sanitizers, etc.

How a Dumpster Rental Can Help

If you can't afford costly services by cleaning pros, consider dumpster rentals to get started on decluttering. It is a fantastic solution to spring clean your basement.

A dumpster rental is a service that delivers a dumpster outside your home. All you have to do is throw the rubbish in the dumpster at your leisure.

Key Takeaway

It’s safe to say that an average family in America owns a lot of stuff somewhere in a basement or a garage. And with all those boxes piled up somewhere, you will find cleaning your basement a lot easier. Spring cleaning is a type of self-care for me because it not only declutters the house but also declutters my mind.

Andrea Wolf of Organize Detroit said in an article, “It’s not about labels and making things look perfect, it’s about a healthy mindset.” I totally agree with her. I hope spring cleaning brings you as much joy as it did me. Good luck!
