Everyone knows the first rule of owning guns: safety first. That means while handling, cleaning, operating, and even throwing away.
40% of households in the US have at least one firearm in the house. Improperly storing and handling your guns and ammo can lead to accidental shootings. There are an average of 623 accidental shootings per year that result in around 461 deaths of all ages. That’s a statistic we can all do our part in to decrease.
Proper gun care also involves proper gun disposal. Here, we’re going to go over the proper ways to dispose of guns and ammunition.
Can You Throw Guns in the Trash?
No. Do not, under any circumstances, throw your gun into the trash.
Do not throw ammunition into the trash either, even the spent rounds.
Why Can't Guns Go in the Trash?
It’s against the law and very dangerous for you, your family, the trash collectors, and the general public. Guns and ammo are considered explosive hazards and improperly handling them can be very dangerous,
If the guns or ammo explode in the truck or the landfill, that will pose a huge safety risk.
How to Dispose of Guns and Ammunition
1. Take them to Your Local Police Precinct
Every police department in any city should have the capabilities to accept firearms and ammo and dispose of them properly. They will be able to walk you through the process of bringing in your guns and any administrative information you’ll need to share.
2. Sell Them
There are many options, depending on your local laws. In many places, you may be able to trade in your gun with the retailer you bought it from for store credit. You might even be able to find resale shops that will give you cash.
3. Donate Them
The National Center for Unwanted Firearms accepts all firearms and works to promote responsible disposal and repurposing of guns. All you have to do is fill out their contact form, they send you a box, shipping label, and instructions, and then you send it in.
You may also be able to bring a large quantity of unused ammo and firearms to organizations that specifically repurpose decommissioned guns, such as Raw Tools.
