To park your rental dumpster on the bustling and lively streets of Portland, you must first obtain a permit from the City. The public right-of-way, comprising all public properties and thoroughfares, is subject to regulations that seek to ensure the safety and convenience of all community members. You must endure the arduous process of obtaining a permit which can take up to 24 hours.
The City of Portland charges a modest $32 fee for a right-of-way portable storage container permit. However, no permit is needed if the dumpster is placed on private property. Homeowners' associations should be consulted for any restrictions or requirements.

You should take care to not overfill your dumpster. This is especially true when you are disposing of very heavy material. Each container is subject to a weight limit at the landfill. If the dumpster container exceeds this, there could be additional charges. In addition, material that is loaded higher than the top rail of the dumpster is unsafe to transport. If your dumpster is overloaded, you may be asked to remove some of the material or have an additional dumpster delivered to accommodate the full load.
Rain or snow can accumulate in your rental dumpster container. Not only can this result in water pooling at the bottom of your dumpster, but items in the dumpster can absorb that water. This can lead to your load weighing more at the landfill. Some of the accumulated water will drain out when the dumpster is tipped to load it onto the hauling truck. But this can’t remove the water from soaked items in the dumpster. To prevent excess water from adding weight to your dumpster, you can cover your dumpster with a large tarp when you are expecting heavy rain or snow. Any excess weight will be subject to an overweight fee if it exceeds the weight allowance.
Your rental dumpster is not weighed until it reaches the landfill. The truck driver stops on a large scale at the entrance to the facility. The total weight is measured and recorded. The truck operator will then proceed into the landfill to dump the load. The truck with the empty container is then reweighed when it leaves the facility. The difference in weight is calculated to determine the weight of the trash load. Discount Dumpster offers a generous weight allowance for our containers. If the weight of your load exceeds these limits, there could be an overweight charge. This is prorated per ton of extra weight.
