Before we can determine whether you can toss yard waste in a dumpster, we should probably clarify what, exactly, we’re referring to. Generally, yard waste includes any organic materials or waste that is produced during your time spent working in the yard.
These includes yard waste such as:
· Leaves and leaf piles
· Grass clippings
· Tree trimmings
· Broken or clipped branches
· Small tree stumps
· Brush
· Lawn edging
· Houseplants or garden plants
Yard waste guidelines will vary by area. While most types of yard waste are acceptable in dumpster containers, there are a few exceptions. As a professional dumpster rental company, we do not recommend tossing the following into your rental dumpster:
There are many ways to dispose of yard waste. However, certain methods are a bit better than others. If you’re looking to dispose of yard waste and debris, here is how our debris-removal experts recommend doing so:
Renting dumpsters is the best choice for extensive yard waste cleanups. Not only do you have a safe spot to store all of the yard waste you gather, you can clean up at your own pace.
Discount dumpster offers dumpster rentals at flat-rate prices, which include taxes and local hauling fees. Our delivery and pickup services also come free of charge. No matter the amount of yard waste, dumpsters can handle it without issue.
So, can you recycle yard waste? The answer is yes. There are many yard waste recycling facilities available nationwide, so check and see if there is a site near you. Generally, yard waste recycling facilities accept leaves, grass, clippings, brush, and branches less than four inches in diameter and eight feet in length. Not only that, but they typically charge a rate far lower than the garbage disposal fee.
However, most recycling facilities do not accept large stumps, dimensional lumber, rocks, dirt, sod, demolition debris, glass, metal, or plastic as yard waste. Therefore, you will need to empty all containers — including plastic bags — that were used for transportation and take them home for disposal or reuse.
Aren’t interested in hauling your yard waste yourself? Hire a junk removal company to do the dirty work for you. There are plenty of junk removal companies that specialize in hauling yard waste and other special types of debris. Therefore, if you’re not sure what to do with the leaf piles in your front yard, you can hire a removal company to transport them to the proper waste collection sites.
However, as you can probably guess, convenience often comes with a price tag, and hiring a junk removal company is one of the more expensive ways of getting rid of yard waste. For that reason, we always recommend contacting several different companies for a quote that best suits your budget.
All jurisdictions are different, and some will allow you to toss your yard waste into your regular garbage removal service. However, other jurisdictions will not. Instead, these jurisdictions will sometimes offer a curbside yard waste collection service.
If this is true for your area, then you can leave your leaves, trimmings, brush, and grass right on the curb. Sometimes, you can recycle food scraps and food-soiled paper in your yard waste cart as well.
Note that an additional fee might be charged for this service, as it could be done by a separate waste management service.
Most jurisdictions allow you to burn dry, natural vegetation that is grown on your property. However, household trash, plastic, and tires are not included in this list (and in some places, they are illegal to burn). Make sure to locate a safe burning site that is far enough away from power lines, overhanging limbs, vehicles, and equipment.
Once you have located your site, you will need to clear at least three times the height of your burn pile for vertical clearance. Surround the burn site with either gravel or mineral soil (dirt) at least ten feet in all directions. Then, water down your surroundings during the burn and keep a shovel close by in case.
Because yard waste consists entirely of organic material, it is easy to reuse and repurpose it. Below are some eco-friendly ways to repurpose your yard waste:
Using a woodchipper (or by hiring a tree removal service), you can chip your old yard waste into mulch. Not only does mulch make flower beds look nice, but it helps cover bare soil. Bare soil, if you didn’t already know, lacks biodiversity and is more prone to erosion than covered soil.
Not only will this save you time mowing, but grass clippings protect soil and eventually decompose, depositing valuable nutrients into the ground.
Use old branches, brush, and other yard waste to add bulk when creating or filling raised garden beds. They can also form mounds to plant things like pumpkins, squash, and melons. Yard waste breaks down and releases nutrients over time, making it great for plant health.
While branches and thick stems take a while to break down, they are terrific for creating low-maintenance compost piles that you can use in the future.
If you can’t find any use for your old yard waste, check and see if a friend or neighbor could use it. Who knows if they need old wood, mulch, or compost!
An easy and affordable way to handle your yard waste removal is to rent a roll-off dumpster container. Not only will a dumpster accept items that your regular waste collection service will not, but you won’t have to worry about finding a proper recycling center or landfill for your yard waste.
Here at Discount Dumpster, we take care of the dumpster’s transportation needs. Our team will drop the container off at your project site, and when you’re all finished, we pick it up and take it where it needs to go. Therefore, if you don’t want to worry about landfills or recycling centers, renting a dumpster will be a convenient, budget-friendly option.
Have you decided to rent a roll-off dumpster container to dispose of your yard waste? Wondering which sized dumpster container is best? Here at Discount Dumpster, we have a wide variety of container sizes to choose from. That way, there is a dumpster available for every-sized project and budget.
For yard waste disposal, we typically recommend renting either our 10 yard or 15 yard dumpster containers, depending on the project’s size and level of debris. If your project involves disposing of leaves, trimmings, or grass, a 10 yard dumpster will do the job. However, if your project involves disposing of trimmed branches or small tree stumps, the 15 yard dumpster is a better option.
Look no further than Discount Dumpster. We are a family-owned and operated dumpster rental service that services 25 different states. We’d be thrilled to help you find a dumpster for your upcoming project!
To get started, simply contact our team. One of our dumpster experts will chat with you about your project and help you select the best container for your needs. From there, we will offer you a low, flat rate that is based on the unit’s size, estimated weight, and location. Of course, the rate will include all additional taxes and fees (including the dumpster’s transportation costs).

Dumpsters are the best choice for ongoing projects like yard waste cleanup. Some materials can't go into your local trash service. Junk removal services are quite costly for ongoing cleanups.
To save money and have flexibility in your work flow, renting dumpsters is the way to go. Our dumpsters are all rented at a flat-rate, which covers delivery and pickup.

SOD can be difficult to dispose of when wet. Many landfills will not take SOD due to this. SOD can be disposed of through alternative means, such as landscaping waste sites.
We highly recommend not going that route. If your landscaping project is large enough to warrant a large dumpster like a 20 or 30 yard, then no need to worry. However, most landscaping projects do not require sizes that big. We suggest explaining the specs of your project in detail so we can determine if larger sizes are warranted.
Just about. The issue with soil disposal is the weight it can add. You can toss a bunch of soil in a dumpster, have it beneath the fill line, and find out your dumpster was overweight. Due to this, we do not accept soil in dumpsters, even if small amounts.
Discount Dumpster's standard rental period is 14 days. Some service areas may only have 7 or 10 day rental periods, however. No need to worry! You can extend your rental period at any time for a small fee per additional day.
If you have a landscaping project where a lot of rock disposal is involved, we suggest asking about our inert heavy boxes. These dumpsters are small, but designed to hold many tons of heavy waste like rocks.
A dumpster that is overweight will be charged a fee per extra ton overweight once it gets to the landfill. We recommend not filling the dumpster too high and carefully monitor what, and how much, yard waste material you are throwing away.
