Hazardous waste includes any item that is flammable, combustible, explosive, corrosive, reactive, or toxic. In Idaho, Ada County has a free hazardous waste disposal program that allows residents to leave their hazardous materials at the landfill or at one of the mobile collection sites. There is no charge, and items are accepted on Fridays and Saturdays.
The Household Hazardous Waste program is a recycling program. Many of the materials brought to the landfill are still usable. You can go to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility to pick up some of the chemicals you can make use of (at no charge).
You can also bring old or broken television sets and computer monitors to the landfill at no charge.

If you are replacing your roof and plan to dispose of your old asphalt shingles, Discount Dumpster’s team can figure out the square footage of your roof by using aerial photos. We’ll use this information to recommend the right dumpster size, so make sure to tell us if your roof has more than a single layer of shingles. Keep in mind that asphalt shingles are recyclable, so a container ordered for that purpose should not contain any other type of waste material.
Some dumpsters have holes in the bottom to allow for water to run off, and all dumpsters have moveable doors that are not flush and do not create a tight seal. So some of the water will drain when the dumpster is loaded at the time of collection. Any remaining water will slightly increase the weight, but the overweight cost per gallon of water is only about 28 cents. Be aware that the contents of your roll off will absorb some of the water, thereby increasing the weight of mattresses and some furniture. However, a heavy-duty dumpster filled with 10 tons of concrete could crack a driveway or leave scratches. If you are disposing of that amount of weight, you can put plywood down before the container is delivered to avoid those scratches.
Basically, a clean load is a dumpster filled with the same type of recyclable material, such as concrete or asphalt from a driveway. Those substances go to a recycling plant where the material is ground up and reused. Keep in mind that you cannot throw any other items in the same dumpster as recyclable material.
Your backyard may contain items made with what is commonly referred to as pressure-treated lumber. This type of lumber was commonly used in items such as picnic tables, decking material, and playsets built before 2004. If you have any of these older items, they are likely treated with CCA (chromium, copper, and arsenic), which is toxic and can leach into ground water. Some landfills will accept this type of lumber. You should consult your local landfill before putting it in your dumpster.
