Landfills:
If you are loading heavy construction material into your dumpster, it can exceed the weight limit even when it is below the fill line. We recommend discussing your project with our friendly team to be sure you get the right container for your needs.
If you find that you are getting close to the fill line and may go over, please try to rearrange the debris in your dumpster. A dumpster that is filled to the top is dangerous to transport and may exceed the weight limit of your rental plan. The driver may have to unload some of your material and leave it for you to manage later. Some overfilled bins are not suitable for pickup at all. Please keep your content at or below the fill line.
Concrete, asphalt shingles, bricks, and dirt weigh more than wood and may require you to get a larger dumpster with a higher weight allowance. Heavy construction debris weighs about 1 ton per yard, so be aware of what you are disposing of. A load over 10 tons cannot be transported in a safe manner.
Smaller dumpsters do not weigh more than a regular car, and they are not likely to damage your driveway. If your driveway is new, or if you have a heavy dumpster coming, you may want to take extra precautions. You can protect your driveway by putting down lumber and plywood for the dumpster to rest on.
Large appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, stoves, dishwashers, washers, and dryers cannot be put into a landfill and should be recycled. It’s also important to safely dispose of or recycle smaller appliances that have electronic components: microwaves, bread machines, coffee makers, and rice cookers. All of these items can be taken to the Recycling Center at 2201 Sisters Walk Ct, Virginia Beach, VA 23454. Call 804-706-5877 for more information.
There are many different types of mattresses, but all of them have disposal restrictions. Innerspring mattresses can take up to 120 years to decompose in a landfill. Polyurethane foam mattresses may take up to 1,000 years to decompose. During decomposition, mattresses can house rodents and bacteria, and the springs can damage landfill liners, allowing toxic chemicals to leak into the ground. Recycling your mattress is an eco-friendly alternative. Mattress Disposal Plus can pick up your old mattress and box spring for recycling.
