Are you ready to start your home renovation or clean up project in San Diego? Renting a dumpster makes handling the trash easy and affordable. You may be wondering if you have to deal with getting a permit for your rental dumpster. Like many cities, San Diego does have permitting requirements for roll off dumpsters.

Are Dumpster Permits Necessary for Cities like San Diego?

San Diego is seeing an upward trend in home sales, with a 9.7% increase over last year. With this increase comes an uptick in home improvement projects. The San Diego-Chula Vista-Carlsbad area ranks in the top 10 large metro areas investing most in home improvements.

If you are among the many home owners doing these renovations, you’ll want to rent a dumpster to make the job easier. When you call to order your dumpster, we’ll go over any permitting requirements for the city of San Diego.

Do You Need a Roll Off Dumpster Permit in San Diego?

When a rental dumpster is placed in a city right-of-way, a permit is needed. What is a right-of-way area? This is a public area such as a street, trail, sidewalk, or city-owned land. This permit must be pulled by the customer.

When are Permits Needed in San Diego?

If you cannot fit your rental dumpster entirely onto your own private property, we’ll discuss the permit process with you and help you along the way. Your permit must be secured and paid for by the scheduled delivery date for your rental dumpster.

In San Diego, dumpster permits fall under the traffic control division. A permit is required for all public improvement projects, construction projects, or other work that will cause the dumpster to encroach into the public right-of-way. This includes sidewalks, parking spaces, medians, alleys, and streets. Further restrictions stipulate that the dumpster cannot have street placement in front of a painted curb (red curb), passenger loading zone (white curb), or disabled person parking zones (blue curb).

The permit allows for the temporary use of a street, sidewalk, or parking lane for the dumpster permit. To obtain the permit, you must complete and submit a Traffic Control Plan/Permit Form DS-269 and submit a traffic control plan. This can be done online.

If you live in a neighborhood governed by an HOA (homeowners association), check to see if there are any restrictions on a dumpster placement in front of your home. You may need to secure permission from the HOA before your delivery date. There may also be restrictions on the size of the container and the length of the rental period.

Are There Permit Exceptions?

There are some exceptions to this permitting requirement. If the dumpster container can fit entirely onto your private property, you will not need a permit in San Diego. This includes driveway placement, but you must ensure that the no part of the dumpster container spills over onto the sidewalk area or impedes access to any public space.

If you’re unsure whether your dumpster can fit onto your property, discuss this with us when you call to order your dumpster. We’ll give you the exact measurement of the dumpster container along with any necessary clearance needed. We’ll then help you determine if you’re able to skip the permit or not.

Additional Requirements for a Dumpster Delivery in San Diego

In addition to the permitting requirement, you must keep the rental dumpster at least 10 feet from the dumpster door to the nearest obstruction and at least 25 feet from the dumpster door to an alley or curb return. There is also a minimum clearance requirement of 15 feet from the dumpster to a nearby fire hydrant.

Dumpsters may not be placed in front of businesses or residences other than your own. You must also place “No Parking” signs at least 72 hours before your dumpster is delivered. And finally, you must place a barricade with a flashing light at each end of the dumpster. For reference, you can see a sample dumpster placement mockup here.

Why is a Permit Necessary for a Dumpster in San Diego?

A permit requirement is not unnecessary red tape. Permits help ensure that our community is safe from hazards that block access to businesses and homes. They also prevent disruptions to the flow of traffic through the area. Restrictions on the size and length of rental period help keep our streets and neighborhoods free from excess trash buildup as well. Failure to obtain a permit is punishable with monetary fines, so be sure to take care of any permitting requirements before your delivery date.
