We’ve all been there. You walk into your garage to put away the Christmas decorations you’ve been putting off since January, and you look around to find an empty and out-of-the-way space for that box to go. You notice the years of boxes and junk that you’ve accumulated – an old vacuum cleaner that doesn’t work anymore, old children’s books, and old furniture that never made it into your living room.

Whether you’ve just moved, are about to move, or simply need to make some new space, we’re here to help. These are our top 5 garage cleanout tips and tricks.

Why Clean Out The Garage?

Did you know that in the US, 8 out of 10 houses have a 2-car garage, but of those, only 1-2 houses will actually park their car inside. Parking your car inside and away from the elements, whether you live in the deserts of Arizona or the snowscapes of Vermont, will save you upkeep and cleaning costs on your vehicle.

A garage cleanout is also a great way to improve your mental health. Too much clutter can affect our sleep, anxiety levels, and ability to focus.

Top 5 Garage Cleanout Tips and Tricks

Garage cleanouts are a productive way to get up and get active. You’ll be able to make the space more functional for you and your family while also getting away from your couch on the weekends. Cleanouts are also a given in preparation for a garage conversion project.

So why wait? Here are our top 5 tips to clean out your garage.

1. Start Small

Cleaning out your garage doesn’t mean you need to make all your decisions over the course of one weekend. In fact, many junk removal services and dumpster rental companies provide waste removal services and dumpster rentals over a period of time instead of for a few days.

You only need 10 minutes of motivation to get a lot done. Those 10 or more minutes will add up over the course of our two-week rental period and you’ll end up getting a lot done.

Cleaning for small amounts of time with small bursts of energy is a great way to ensure you don’t burn out and give up on the whole project. If you start today, you’re already further along than you were yesterday.

2. Follow the 20/20 Rule

The 20/20 rule is useful for figuring out what to keep and what to throw away. With the 20/20 rule, you should let go of an item if:

  • You can replace it for less than $20, and/or;
  • You can replace it in less than 20 minutes.

This rule is handy for getting rid of old junk like kitchenware, books, toys, makeup, and clothes.

3. Take the 12-12-12 Challenge

The 12-12-12 challenge is a great way to help you sort through what is useful and what is not. With this rule, you’ll find 12 items to throw away, 12 items to donate, and 12 items to put in their proper place.

And if they don’t have a place to go? Maybe you don’t need it!

4. Use the 5-Second Rule

The five-second rule isn’t just for food you’ve dropped on the floor and still want to eat. This trick is useful for tossing junk hard and fast.

Here’s the rule: you pick up an item, and if you can’t remember the last time you used it within five seconds, toss it.

This is not the time to be sentimental. Do you really need all those free t-shirts you got during your illustrious college career?

5. Use the 90/90 Rule

Our last tip can apply to larger items that you bought purely for utility – but are you actually utilizing them?

The rule is simple: have you used this item in the last 90 days, or will you use it in the next 90 days? If the answer is no, it’s time for that item to go.

This doesn’t apply to seasonal items, although you can extend this rule to whether you used it in the last two years or not.

Slow and Steady Wins The Race

We know you’ve spent your hard-earned money on your belongings and invested your mental and emotional energy into keeping them around. Cleaning out a space can cause a lot of emotions to rise up, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Remember, any major cleaning task is all about progress, not perfection. You don’t have to rush anything when it comes to tossing junk. That’s why when you’re tossing enough junk that can’t fit in your regular trash bin, a dumpster rental will give you the freedom of time.
