As per a German saying, windows are the “eyes of the house”. While nowadays we take glass windows for granted, we actually have the Romans to thank for that. They were the first to use glass to build windows way back in 100 AD. The type of windows you own not only determine the amount of natural light and fresh air entering your rooms. Also, it improves the appearance and value of your property.

Since old windows may get damaged or drafty, removing and replacing windows from time to time is the safer, healthier and more energy-efficient choice for your home. Our DIY guide on how to remove windows has got you covered.

Replace a window and you can completely revamp the look of your home. Newer windows such as sliding windows also offer several unexpected benefits.

Why is Window Removal Necessary?

Modern windows may need replacing every 15 to 20 years, as they may get warped or damaged by water, insects or rot, and offer less insulation. Thus, replacing windows over time is necessary to ensure continued comfort and safety in your room. Some of the advantages of removing old windows include:

More Energy Savings

Old windows may have cracks or gaps that allow drafts in. This results in higher energy bills as your heater/cooler may be working overtime to maintain the room temperature. Thus installing windows with proper insulation will reduce your energy costs in the long run, and is also better for the environment.

Greater Comfort and Security

With time and regular use, old windows may get warped or broken. As a result, they may be difficult to operate and these weaknesses may be exploited by burglars. To avoid your old windows from becoming a safety hazard, we recommend replacing them soon with new windows that have easier systems for opening, closing and even locking.

UV Protection

Modern windows are not only designed to be energy-efficient, but offer extra protection and sound proofing. For instance, new windows may have double or triple panes with layers of argon gas that protect the inhabitants from harmful UV rays of the sun. These same panes can also dampen the sounds of traffic, and lead to a quiet and peaceful atmosphere at home.

Increased Home Value

Finally, installing new windows also increases the value of your property by as much as 72%. This is because potential buyers will not have to replace them in a while and the house is guaranteed to have lower energy bills.

So if you’ve been dealing with high energy bills, lots of cold winds, molding frames or you’re worried about home security, it’s probably time to replace old windows. The global doors and windows market is currently valued at $208.1 billion and is expected to reach $356.7 billion by 2032.

How to Remove Windows Properly

Replacing a window with new siding windows or triple-pane soundproof windows may initially sound cumbersome but is definitely worth the time, money and energy. You can hire professionals to come to your home and remove the windows (which is expensive), but if you’re confident and handy with tools, removing a window and installing a new one in its place can be a rewarding weekend project.

Either way, our guide on how to remove windows should answer your basic questions and help you get started!

1. Inspect Your Windows

Before removing a window, you must carefully inspect it for damages. Use a measuring tape to measure the length, breadth and width, and note down the various sizes. Make a list of the measurements and begin assembling all the tools and materials.

Remove the Window Frame: First you must remove the screws and then with a putty knife or a pry bar, you can carefully remove the frame.

2. Remove the Sash Weights and Stops

Older windows may come with springs or sash weights—so carefully cut the cords or slowly remove the screws holding them in place. For the stops, you might be able to pry them off, and if not, cut them with an oscillating saw. Afterward, you’ll be able to remove the top sash, followed by the lower sash. We recommend you have a helper to hold the items and aid with the removal.

3. Remove Paint

Once the frame is dislodged, you have to clean the area so that a new window can be fitted in place. Carefully remove any blistered paint or dirt from the side of the walls.

4. Repair Any Cracks

If there are any cracks or gaps in the wall due to water, rot, mold or other damage, now is the time to repair them. Dispose of the old materials.

5. Prepare the Surface

Before installing the new frame, you must ensure the surface is adequately prepared. Sand the jambs, and prime/paint the surface for the new window.

6. Install Flashing Tape

Now you must install flashing around the window from bottom up and then apply the sealant. For added insulation, you can add fiberglass or spray foam.

7. Install the Window

Before installing the new frame, double-check the installation area and test that the new frame is fitting correctly. Apply the beads of caulk and prepare the stops. Then affix the window tightly. Install the shims and trim them if required.

8. Secure the Frame

Finally secure the frame with screws, and use more foam sealant if there are any gaps.

Window Replacement is Easy and Necessary

Before you replace a window, do your research diligently and assemble all the required materials. Many of the materials come with detailed instructions from the manufacturers so you must read them carefully to prevent any mishaps. In fact, if you’re doing this on your own, study each step multiple times and watch online tutorials so that you understand all the techniques and what exactly you have to do. However, if you get stuck at any point, don’t hesitate to seek professional help from a licensed contractor, as removing and installing windows can be quite laborious and dangerous.

Thus, if the windows in your house are very old and/or damaged, replacing them is crucial for your safety and comfort. Newer windows are carefully designed to allow sunlight and fresh air, while also keeping out harmful UV radiation and dampening loud noises of nearby traffic or construction work. Moreover, they are also fitted with easy-to-use lock mechanisms, protecting the house from burglars and vandals.
