Do you know how to choose the right size dumpster for your project? When you’re embarking on a renovation project, figuring out what size dumpster to get can be one of the hardest parts. How are you supposed to estimate how your debris will stack up in a dumpster – especially if you’ve never rented before?

Thankfully, our Discount Dumpster team is one of the best in the industry. We have ample experience helping customers determine the best roll-off dumpster sizes for their home renovations and remodel projects.

Below is a brief overview of how to choose the right dumpster size for your project. However, if you’re still confused, don’t hesitate to reach out. Our customer service reps would be more than happy to answer your questions and walk you step-by-step through the dumpster rental process.

What Dumpster Size Do I Need?

Choosing the right dumpster for your project depends on several factors. Generally, you will need to assess your project’s scope. It's good to understand how much debris you’re getting rid of; what material your debris is; and where you will be placing your dumpster rental.

Type of Debris

Different dumpster containers haul different kinds of debris. For example, yard waste, broken countertops, and asphalt all require different containers. Because of its lighter weight, yard waste usually goes into one of our smaller dumpsters. And heavier items – like roofing shingles – call for one of our special inert dumpsters.

Debris Volume

The dumpster you choose must accommodate the volume of your debris. Keep in mind that you aren’t allowed to overflow your container (debris might fall out during transportation). Therefore, you must select your dumpster size accordingly.

Debris Weight

In addition to the volume of debris it can hold, each container size has a weight allowance. And just because your debris physically fits inside the container does not mean it adheres to said weight limit. When making your dumpster selection, pay attention to how many tons the container can hold. Then, select the container that accommodates your needs.

What Are the Dimensions of a 10-Yard Dumpster?

Our 10-yard dumpsters are the smallest container size that we offer. Logistically, they are 12 feet long by 6 feet wide by 4 feet tall and can hold up to 10 cubic yards of trash. (That equates to about 4 pickup truckloads of debris.)

We recommend this dumpster size to customers embarking on small-scale projects in residential areas. This is because 10-yard dumpsters are ideal for disposing of broken furniture, household junk, and yard waste. Additionally, they take up minimal space on your property and can fit in most driveways (which saves you the hassle of having to secure permits).

What Are the Dimensions of a 20-Yard Dumpster?

Renting a 20-yard dumpster is a great option for medium-sized projects. A standard 20-yard dumpster measures 20 feet long by 8 feet wide and 4 feet tall. And because of this low profile, this dumpster is easier to load than some of its taller counterparts.

Our 20-yard dumpsters are designed to hold about 6 pickup loads of trash (which is about 120 33-gallon trash bags). The weight limit for a 20-yard dumpster is about 2 to 3 tons, or up to 4,000 to 6,000 pounds of waste.

Usually, our 20-yard dumpsters can fit within a standard driveway. They are ideal for disposing of waste from large decluttering projects, home remodels, small construction projects, or commercial landscaping.

What Are the Dimensions of a 30-Yard Dumpster?

The 30-yard dumpster is the second largest size that we offer. Logistically, it is 22 feet long by 8 feet wide by 6 feet high. It can haul about 180 large trash bags of debris, which is enough to fill 12 pickup trucks. Additionally, it has a weight limit of about 3 to 4 tons or 6,000 to 8,000 pounds of trash.

Homeowners embarking on large remodeling projects and contractors working large job sites will benefit from renting a dumpster of this size. It is especially useful for flipping houses, demolition projects, and extensive household (or office) cleanouts. In many cases, it fits within a residential driveway. However, our team can help you navigate the right-of-way permitting process if it doesn’t.

What Are the Dimensions of a 40-Yard Dumpster?

The 40-yard dumpster is the largest container size offered at Discount Dumpster. It is 24 feet long by 8 feet wide by 8 feet tall. Oftentimes, a 40-cubic yard container is the largest size you can get, making it great for bulky materials and waste. Our 40-yard dumpster holds up to 5 tons or 10,000 pounds of waste – equating to about 16 pickup truck loads.

Because it is the largest dumpster size you can rent, we recommend 40-yard dumpsters for new home construction, building demolitions, and disaster relief. The dumpster has back-door access, allowing you to load it efficiently and easily.

How to Measure Dumpster Sizes

A dumpster’s exterior is measured in feet, and total volume is measured in cubic yards. If you want to calculate the capacity of a dumpster, you’ll need to multiply its length by width by height. This will give you its capacity in cubic feet. To convert that number into cubic yards, simply divide it by 27.

Each container's name coincides with its cubic volume, so you can skip all the complex calculations. If you need a dumpster that can hold 15 cubic yards of debris, simply select our 15-yard dumpster option!
