Congratulations on deciding to rent a dumpster in to help get your project done! You should be excited to get to work.

However, you want to cover all your bases (that’s why you’re here, right?). You’re renting a dumpster in Chicago and you want to know whether or not you need a permit!

Do You Need A Permit To Rent A Dumpster In Chicago?

Short answer: yes.

Long answer: yes and no.

Let us expand on that. Different cities have different requirements, and Chicago is no exception. Even the suburbs around here, like Aurora, Arlington Heights, and Oak Lawn, have different requirements and rules for their dumpster permits.

For Chicago specifically, you do not need a permit if you’re planning on keeping your dumpster completely on your property. When we say completely, we mean completely. If there’s even an inch on the sidewalk or street, you may be fined.

A permit is only necessary if you are placing, or partially placing, your roll off dumpster on public property, like a street, sidewalk, or alley.

That’s why when you’re setting up your rental, your dumpster company will ask a ton of questions about the project you’re doing and where you want to put your dumpster so we can make sure you get the right size for your needs and for your physical property.

That being said, if you can place your dumpster completely on your own property, like your driveway, you won’t need a permit.

How Do I Find More Information on Permits?

Sometimes a quick google can give you all the answers you need, but sometimes for smaller cities and towns, it may be difficult to find the information you need.

When you’re planning your rental, you can call city hall to get information on all permit-related needs. Or, you can also give us a call and we’ll help point you in the right direction.

Chicago dumpster permit information can be found here, and an application can also be submitted online.

How Long do Permit Applications Take?

This again varies city-to-city. In Chicago, the typical application will take around fifteen-twenty minutes to complete. And the great thing is, for most areas, permits will typically be issued immediately after the application is received.

However, depending on your town, you may find that the waiting process is longer than anticipated. You can always call city hall to check the status of applications.

We also recommend applying for your permit with as much advance notice as possible. We don’t want you to incur any fines from the city because your permit application was received late. Please make sure you have your permit in place before your dumpster is delivered.

Am I Responsible for Getting a Permit?

Yes, customers typically pull their own permits. Some other dumpster rental companies may apply for the permit for you, but that is on a case-by-case basis.

Even though we don’t apply for the permit for you, since there is a lot of information we don’t have regarding your home and neighborhood, we will be happy to give you any information you need. We will also be able to provide dimensions of the dumpster you’re renting.

How Much Do Permits Cost?

There are 2 different types of dumpster permits in the City of Chicago; a 3-day permit and a 30-day permit. Permits can be issued for any group of days, including weekends and holidays.

3-day permits cost around $70-$100

30-day permits cost $120

The price may vary depending on whether your dumpster will potentially block a parking meter. The city will charge extra for the permit fee to make up for the lost revenue from the parking meters it is blocking. Be sure to note the number of any blocked parking meters in your application.

Are There Any Exceptions to the Permit Rules in Chicago?

The only time when you won’t need a permit is if your dumpster is completely on your own property.

You’ll also want to check with your HOA to make sure there isn’t additional paperwork needed to have a dumpster on site.

Knowing the Permit Process in Chicago is Important

Permits can be a bit of a hassle, but they’re a necessary evil when doing work in a city. Think of all the construction you see on Lakeshore or down Western and all of the permits that those guys have to deal with on the daily. Wow.
