When it’s time to rent a dumpster in Denver, how do you know if you need a permit? Permit requirements vary across the country. Most cities have some requirement for a dumpster permit placed in a public right-of-way. However, some small municipalities and county areas take a more freewheeling approach, allowing citizens and businesses to place roll off dumpsters without any permission at all.
In the Denver metro area, there are varying requirements for permitting. Each suburb has its own regulations, and unincorporated areas may have different requirements. It’s important to check on permitting requirements before renting a dumpster.
Cities and counties must ensure that public right-of-way streets and sidewalks stay clear from obstructions as much as possible. When a dumpster is placed on a street surface, even if it is in front of a residential home, this access is impeded.
While this may not seem like a big deal in a rural area, there can be some repercussions in an urban area. A rental dumpster could impede traffic through the area, may take up valuable parking spaces, and could prevent emergency response vehicles from getting close to a scene.
To manage this, cities typically require a permit for a temporary dumpster container. If you’re placing the rental dumpster onto a residential driveway, you will likely not need a permit. But any other placement could require a permit. This includes the street in front of your home, a back alley, across a sidewalk, or on a public trail. You may also need a permit when placing a dumpster in a parking lot.
For many projects, placing a dumpster in a driveway or on other areas of your private property just isn’t an option. In the City of Denver, you should obtain a Right-of-Way Revocable Street Occupancy Permit before placing any container within the right of way.

According to the Denver Revised Municipal Code, a dumpster permit is required to
“Control placement and maintenance of dumpsters and containers in the public right-of-way so not to present an inconvenience or danger to the safety and welfare of persons using the right-of-way.”
This includes pedestrians, vehicles, and anyone performing essential utility, traffic control, and emergency services.
A permit must be obtained before the scheduled delivery day. The City of Denver recommends allowing five days for permit application processing. In Denver, the dumpster rental company obtains a right-of-way permit. It must be placed on the dumpster container in a visible location or at the nearby property, and the dumpster containers must have the company name, address, and phone number on the side of the container. There are additional requirements for reflective tape or panel barricades with flashing lights placed on the street facing side of the container.
These rules apply to the city limits of Denver proper. In many surrounding areas such as Aurora, Arvada, Englewood etc., permits must be pulled by the customer if they are needed.
If the dumpster can fit on your private driveway, then a permit is not needed. The container cannot extend over the sidewalk or block access to any public areas. You may also place the dumpster behind your home or business without a permitting requirement. This is the case as long as it is private land and you have the permission of the property owner.
It is important to ensure that a rental dumpster is placed properly, even when a permit is obtained. Denver code stipulates that the container must be a minimum of 20 feet from any street corner, sidewalk ramp, or alley. The container may never impede a sidewalk, tree lawn, travel lane, fire hydrant, no-parking-zone, or temporary loading zone.
How long can you keep a dumpster on a street? The permit limits placement of a rental dumpster to no more than 180 days out of any consecutive 12-month period at any address.
